Role Title: Mainframe Engineer

JOB DESCRIPTION
The University of Maryland seeks an experienced Mainframe Engineer contractor
to support development, maintenance, and enhancement of mainframe applications.
The role requires deep expertise in COBOL, CICS, TSO, and JCL, with a
demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, optimize, and deliver efficient batch and online
processing solutions. The contractor will work in a hybrid environment with a
minimum of two days per week on-site presence at the Riverdale, MD location.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Developing, maintaining, and enhancing mainframe applications,
troubleshooting issues, optimizing code, and working closely with cross-
functional teams to deliver high-quality solutions.
Develop, maintain, and enhance mainframe applications using COBOL and
CICS
Write, maintain, and optimize JCL for batch job processing
Use TSO for daily mainframe operations, debugging, and deployment
Troubleshoot and resolve application issues promptly
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand requirements and
deliver high-quality solutions
Participate in code reviews, testing, and documentation
Continuously improve existing applications for performance and
maintainability
Perform other duties within the scope of mainframe engineering as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATION
Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience with:
COBOL programming
CICS transaction processing
TSO environment
JCL scripting for batch jobs
Familiarity with CA-IDEAL and CA Datacom is a plus.
Strong problem-solving and communication skills are essential.
Experience in mainframe modernization or migration projects
Knowledge of best practices in mainframe system security and compliance.
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related
field preferred
Relevant mainframe certifications are a plus
